What are Dentures?
Often referred to as “false teeth”, dentures are simply removable, artificial replacements for missing teeth. Dentures can be easily taken out of the mouth for cleaning, adjusment, or comfort during sleep, and are constructed from high quality dental materials.
Although dentures will not feel and behave exactly like real teeth, today’s dentures are at once natural looking, comfortable, and easy to get used to.
There are two basic types of dentures, depending on whether all or just some of the teeth are removed: full and partial.
Reasons for dentures:
- Complete Denture – Loss of all teeth due to trauma or periodontal disease.
- Partial Denture – Loss of several teeth.
- Enhancing smile and the positioning of facial tissues.
- Improving chewing, speech, and digestion.
Getting Used to New Dentures
Your Carlsbad Dentist will develop your new dentures after several appointments, during the course of several weeks. Sophisticated processes are used to accurately measure and create impressions in your mouth so that your new dentures fit nicely, feel comfortable, and function as your own real teeth.
Initially, dentures can feel uncomfortable and foreign for the first several weeks, this is natural because your existing bite will be necessarily completely re-built. Eating and speaking with your new teeth will require some adjusting to, but after several weeks, or even months, you will become accustomed to them and will cease to think of them as something that doesn’t belong in your mouth.
